| Obama's
plan to give gay visitation rights in hospitals. |
|
Do any of you have stories of being
unable to visit your loved one in the hospital?
Probably not. The majority of America is
not homosexual. This is the big issue that
gay people are afraid of running into one day
in their lives. Somehow gays can suffer
the small, daily indignities. The insignificant
things related to someone looking them over to
help someone else in a store. When it comes
to laws separating us from a loved one, though,
we are outraged, and we are unprotected.
The laws are under the guise of protecting a patient's
privacy. Now imagine that the patient's
privacy the hospital is protecting is your partner!
Someone reading
this article right now has experienced this.
Some of the folks reading this aren't old enough
to understand or they haven't had a loved one
in the hospital. You see, this terrible
issue preys upon the old and the weak. As
we age, we find our loved ones sick more often,
your partner has more of a chance of being an
inpatient at some point; and of course, you may
experience the loss of a partner. Can you
IMAGINE being turned away from your partner or
spouse's bedside at this most fragile time?
If you saw that an elderly person or a similarly
"weak" person was being intimated or
berated, wouldn't you step in to redirect the
offending party? Why do some Americans not
have the same instincts in regards to GLBTQQ people?
Many people
believe in a higher power that judges now or will
judge at the end of one's mortal life. When
a lesbian or gay man is turned away from entering
the room of a dying partner, they have been judged.
Judged not by god or a jury of their peers, but
by a fellow human who assumes that they know the
thoughts and heart of a higher power.
I can think
of no greater sin than one against one's fellow
(wo)man. -Joyce Respess
